SINGAPORE, 6 January 2013 – 17-year-old sprint sensation Shanti Veronica Pereira broke two records in the century sprint yesterday on the first day of the SAA Track and Field Series 1 held at ITE College East Simei, and in the process qualified for both the SEA Youth Championships and the 8th IAAF World Youth Championships to be held in Ukraine in July.
The former Singapore Sports School student stopped the clock at 12.16s (1.9m/s) in the Women’s 100m Dash (Junior/Open) to break her own personal best and former national junior record of 12.21s set during the Colombo Asian Junior Championships in Sri Lanka last June. The timing also rewrote Shanti’s own national Best Youth Performance record (12.21s).
For good measure, the be-‐spectacled teenager then ran 58.41s to beat the qualifying mark of 58.72s in the 400m for the 8th SEA Youth Championships (4th-‐8th June), meaning she will compete in a hat-‐trick of sprint events (100m, 200m & 400m) in in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Shanti, younger sister of former national sprinter Valerie Pereira, had earlier qualified for the 200m for the SEA Youth Championships on the back of her performance during the Asian Junior Championships (24.93s), which also met the World Youth Championships (10th-‐14th July) qualifying mark for the same event in Donetsk, Ukraine. She had won a bronze in Colombo in the 200m.
The youngster is understandably delighted with her record-‐breaking form and start to the new season. After clocking 25.40s in the 200m on Day Two of the SAA Track and Field Series 1 at ITE College East, Shanti said about her 100m time that “the record and the time were so unexpected this early in the season. After three weeks training in Germany, I feel I can go faster, hopefully 12.10s. I don’t think I will go under 12.10 this year but I hope I can in the future.” Shanti also said “I have only competed in SEA or Asian competitions, so I am really excited about competing in my first World’s.”
Shanti will be competing in the 100m and 200m sprints during the World Youth Championships. Despite running a slower 200m time on Day Two, Shanti said “I was tired today so I didn’t run as fast as I could. I am looking forward to running the 200m though as it my favourite event.”
We wish Shanti Veronica Pereira all the best in her future races, may she breaks more records and brings Singapore many more gold medal for years to come.
Cheers! (:
Very nice article and right to the point. I am not sure if this
is really the best place to ask but do you people have any thoughts
on where to get some professional writers? Thank you 🙂
Hi, I do think this is an excellent web site.
I stumbledupon it 😉 I’m going to return yet again since i have saved as a favorite it. Money and freedom is the greatest way to change, may you be rich and continue to guide other people.
I’m amazed, I must say. Seldom do I come across a blog that’s both educative and engaging,
and let me tell you, you’ve hit the nail on the head. The problem is something that not enough men and women are speaking intelligently about. I’m very happy I came across this during my search for something concerning
this.
