Singapore, 30 March 2013 – The Cold Storage Kids Run 2013 returns for its sixth edition with a launch graced by Olympic sprinter Mr C Kunalan and DJ / Presenter Ms Jamie Yeo where they joined families at United Square to commemorate the launch.

To be held at the Padang on 19 May 2013 (Sunday), Singapore’s best kids run will feature 14 categories including a new non-competitive category – the 3GEN Family Chase, aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle for the family and encourage bonding through exercise.

The new 3GEN Family Chase will see kids with their parents and grandparents in tow, running / walking a distance of 800m together. To participate, kids (7- 12 years old) will just have to team up with their parent and grandparent.

Mr. Wayne Allan Anderson, CEO of Cold Storage said, “The Cold Storage Kids Run has always been the marquee running event for kids in Singapore annually. We hope that with the addition of this new category, the 3GEN Family Chase will encourage more parents and grandparents to join the kids for a day of run, sun and fun!”

Kids aged six months to 12 years old may choose from a total of 14 competitive or non-competitive categories, with distances ranging from 800m to 1.6km to participate in. Parents are encouraged to register for their little runners early, as organisers have limited the race capacity at 5,000 for a safe and enjoyable run for all participants.

Pledge-a-Shoe today!

Olympic sprinter Kunalan whose feat of 10.38 seconds in the 1968 Olympics 100 metres stood as the national record for 33 years, kick started the ‘Pledge-a-Shoe’ fund-raising project at the launch today together with Jamie, Wayne, CEO of Cold Storage and David Sim, Director of ESG.

To drive awareness for underprivileged kids in developing countries, Cold Storage Kids Run 2013 will be embarking on the ‘Pledge-A-Shoe’ project this year, with the aim of raising funds to help children protect their feet by providing them with new shoes.

All funds raised through the event, activities and website will be donated to Caring for Cambodia Fund Singapore, a locally registered charity partnering with Cold Storage Kids Run for this project.

“Sports isn’t just about winning medals or hosting major games. Through sporting events like the Cold Storage Kids Run, the value of giving back to the society is inculcated in our future generation. The young get the opportunity to extend a helping hand to peers of their age in less privileged circumstances and in this way, a caring community is cultivated from young,” said Kunalan, a grandfather of three.

Challenge an Olympic sprinter

Two young fans also got the opportunity to ‘race’ against 70-year-old Kunalan earlier at the launch. One of them was DJ / Presenter Jamie Yeo’s daughter, Alysia Nolte, age 2, while the other was Luis Santiago, age 7, who was thrilled to have won the ‘race’ by 0.14 seconds. He said, “I’m very happy with my time and feel very lucky to compete with an Olympian!”

Jamie attended the launch with her mother, Mrs Sally Yeo and Alysia for a day of fun over the Easter weekend. She said, “The new 3GEN Family Chase category creates more opportunities for young children to bond with their grandparents and parents. With an increasing demand on our time, this is indeed a fun event to take the entire family to.”

Parents who wish to register for their child can still head down to the Cold Storage Kids Run road show at United Square Shopping Mall till Sunday (30 March), 11am – 8pm, or do so online at (www.kidsrun.com.sg). Registration closes on 10 April 2013 or when maximum number of 5,000 participants is reached.
