Nike AW77 Sports Hoodie Customization Launch 1/11/10

Nike Singapore had launch the  AW77 hoodie that is now yours to customize to suits your style, image and personality.

The AW77 is a heritage hoodie that was first created in 1977 by Nike’s Geoff Hollister to fulfill the athletes’ needs for an ultimate hoodie that can withstand the conditions and help the sportsmen focus on their game.  Originally created  specifically for runners to aid their training during the cold condition during the day or night, the hoodie had found itself in many different sports and even in the fashion industry.

For those curious about what AW77 means, it means Athletics West, circa 1977.  Athletics West Running Club was Founded in the 1970s, it comprised of a dozen runners that trained in Eugene, Oregon under the sponsorship of Blue Ribbon Sports which is now known simply as NIKE. The hoodie was fitted with a trademark scuba-hood and since then it had insipire the whole collection which was known as the AW77 collection.

On 1st November, Nike held a Launch for the AW77 customization whereby it is now possible for one to customize the AW77 to their own liking to project their image. One can choose from the available 77 patches and iron on design to add some spice into the hoodie.

Why patches?

Patches had been known to reflect a the organization, club or band that someone belongs to. Patches are symbols  that represent self and it reflect who they are, what they do and it also represent their lifestyle. With this Nike hopes to give to you the chance to decorate and customize the AW77 to reflect your personality, style and passion.

Customization is only available in Nike Flagship store in Wisma Atria through NikeID.

Working with Nike are 9 designers in South East Asia from  Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Singapore, they collaborated to design and create the 35 of the 77 “patches” designs that is available for use in customizing onto the AW77. For Singapore, Alvin Tan of renowned :phunk studio and SBTG’s Mark Ong, shoe customizer extraordinaire was chosen and given the chance to designed a their very own “patches” base on their very own style and meaning.

Both local designer designs was inspire by their love and passion for  Music, Fashion, Sports and it clearly is reflected in their work. Mark’s design the cross-bone checked design patch which reflect his love for ska music, rebel and victory while Alvin design was entitle the flying heartbeat that was inspire from the Greek mythology symbols and the winged horse, Pegasus which symbolize freedom and  a charge for Victory.

How does the Process of customization work?

Step 1: Pick a AW77 Hoodie

The AW77 comes with 21 Colorway variation colors. Choosing the one that suits you might take some time.

Step2: Choosing patches to go along with your AW77

A maximum of 5 patches / iron-on design is allowed to go along with your AW77.  With 77 design to choose from, picking just 5 design to be put onto the AW77 feels like taking an exam.

With so many design to choose from, I had a tough time deciding what I want to be on my new running hoodie; AW77.

As if the patches wasn’t enough, there is also Iron on decal that can be put onto the AW77.  You will be spoil for choices.

Step 3: Deciding where to put the patches

After choosing the 5 patches/ iron on design, it’s time to decide where each patches will be place on. Patches and Iron on design can be place anywhere except:
• Across the zipper as it impedes the hoodie’s function
• Above the embroidered Nike Swoosh on the left-hand-side of the hoodie
• Ribbing (i.e. the bit by your wrists) as the uneven texture will not allow the patches to adhere properly

If you are still unsure where to put the patches, then do like what I do – Ask for assistance from the friendly Nike staffs, with their experience, they can give their recommendation on where to put the patches and iron on design at areas on the hoodie that you never thought off before… I personally like the 77 iron on design on the hoodie, it looks unique.

Step 4: Putting it on permanently

Using the heat press and the specification given by you in step 3. The patches and iron on design is permanently cooperated into your AW77.

After patches is heated on process, it is left to cool off for the adhesive to cool off and permanent attached to the AW77.

Step 5: Show it off!

In less than 2 hours your customize AW77 is all ready for the track and the street. Wherever it will go or whatever you use it for it will be part of you, the design chose and the position you place on reflects your individuality, style and passion.

I can’t wait to wear my customize AW77 for treadmill run session in the gym this weekend. I finally have a running hoodie that not only  help to keep me warm in the cold “full blast air-conditional” gym but the hoodie will also be a representation of myself, my style and my passion for running.
